Glenn Kawabata
University of New Mexico
The
Aqueous series of images developed out of Glenn Kawabata’s quest to follow
the mordonçage process into unknown territory. Mordonçage
is a very fluid process, both literally and figuratively, requiring
at least five extra baths in chemistry and water beyond that of a typical
silver gelatin photograph. The emulsion is then free to lift and move
in the baths, flowing with the currents, and in many of the final pieces,
the imagery seems to move in and out of the paper surface itself.During
the process, areas of the surface are exceptionally sensitive to pressure,
and will record the minutest input from the artist’s hand. The
print then becomes a canvas upon which one may freely manipulate the
original in order to create a new and unique one. Ultimately, Kawabata’s
intentions are to use non-traditional methods in photography to question
the definitions and limitations of contemporary photographic practice. |
