Carla Cioffi

Carla Cioffi is finishing her third year of graduate school at Southern Illinois University. She moved to Carbondale from Maine, having worked in various capacities at The Maine Photographic Workshops. Each year, she goes back to teach the Black and White Crash Course or a Photo I course during the summer Workshop season.

Cioffi’s photographs deal with a kind of awkward emotional interiority that is rooted in a psychological place of limbo between one’s inner space and the outer world. She is interested in this ambiguous space that offers a suspension of judgement, as opposed to specific conclusions. The artist finds the photograph a perfect vehicle for this expression because of its inherent ambiguity.
