Wei Hsueh
Syracuse University

Wei Hsueh is a Taiwanese citizen. She has been educated in Taiwan, Germany and the United States. Wei Hsueh is currently represented by the Carl Hammer Gallery in Chicago. She is a multi-disciplinary artist who employs sculpture, photography, installation, performance, computer imaging and text into her work. Her inspiration has come from routine, daily experiences. She always uses the form of routine, daily experiences as the form of her work. A text that she wrote for "Capital Exchange" (four panels, 16" x 20" each, silver gelatin print, 1996) is an example. The text is about a woman who is trapped and punished for projecting a sexual relationship onto a dog. The text was based on an encounter Wei Hsueh had with a big, white dog everyday on her way to Syracuse University. One day, she stepped on the dog’s shit. She was inspired by the irony of the incident: as soon as the dog showed affection, she had to deal with the dog shit, too. The way of choosing materials has been unavoidable and it has energized her work.
