Carol
Inez Charney received her B.A. in Painting from the University
of California at Santa Cruz in 1985. In the summer of 1997, she
began a body of work in which she photographed Holocaust survivors.
During the past two years, Charneys work has evolved into
a visual exploration of how Holocaust survivors are affected by
their traumatic memories, focusing on how painful memories, when
recollected, separate us from our present reality and how, when
we return to the present, we have been altered by these memories.
Her work is a visual representation of the fragmented psyche caused
by trauma and it explores how, in spite of such adversity, the
soul still finds a way to emerge and seek a higher truth. She
then sequences these images to bear witness to each survivor in
the way a series of film stills communicates a story without the
use of words. Carol is currently working on her M.F.A in photography
at San Jose State University.
