After graduating with degrees in Psychology and Photography from the University of Louisville in Kentucky, Stephen Chalmers moved to Portland, Oregon. In Oregon, he worked as a Lead Treatment Counselor providing residential therapy and overseeing the treatment of sixteen Level 5 Severely Emotionally Disturbed (SED) children.
Three years later, Stephen returned to graduate school, studying photography at Southern Illinois University. Since then, he has taught gang children photography, held workshops in digital and albumen printing and instructed one history and three production classes at the college level. He has also been an Emergency Medical Technician, a contributor to four books (photogravure, digital negative creation, color photography and an African American history project), designed several web sites, and has been in twenty-four group and eight solo shows in the US, Australia, BC and the UK.
