Gerrit Sinclair

Illinois State University

Originally from upstate New York, Gerrit Sinclair has lived in Bloomington, Illinois for several years.  He received a BFA in Photography at the State University of New York at New Paltz, and an MFA at Illinois State University.  The program at Illinois State University is specifically oriented toward documentary work and is tied to the Rural Documentary Collection, an archive of photographs pertaining to the rural culture of Illinois.

Gerrit’s work documents the loss of rural culture associated with modernization, as well as certain area of resistance.  He is currently exploring several sociological critiques that examine the increasingly technological orientation of society, and is combining these theories with the polemic of “New Social Documentary” in an attempt to develop a documentary practice that is relevant to current social trends.
