Nelson Santos
The School of the Art Institute of Chicago
Nelson Santos received a BS In Graphic Design and a B.A. in Art from
San Jose State University in California and his MFA in Photography at The
School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Flesh, fetish, pain, pleasure and ritual are all elements that intrigue
Nelson to examine the balance between the sacred and the profane.
He illuminates individual desires and beliefs while exploring expected social
norms. By investigating the social constructions behind Catholicism
and homosexuality he examines the influence they have had in fabricating
one’s identity. The body is used as the site to map out these
issues. Under the guise of science, he provokes the viewer into an
analytical study of subjective responses. He utilizes photography,
video and installation to create an environment for re-examination.
His images and ideas convey a seductive beauty and a sense of mystery; luring
the eye, arousing desire and disturbing the intellect.
