Tsugumi Maki

School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Born in 1972, Tsugumi Maki moved to the United States from Japan at an early age.   She received her BS In Cinema and Photography from Ithaca College in Ithaca, New York and she is currently an MFA candidate in Critical and Visual Studies at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Tsugumi’s most recent work deals with documentation of memory through photography and words.   She examines the personal, yet universal qualities of remembrances which stem from her experiences as an Asian female raised in a foreign culture.   Her incorporation of text with photographic images evoke montages of memories and of thoughts; projected from artist to viewer.   This examination explores not only the identity of memory, but the imaginative capabilities of the viewer as well.
