School of Visual Arts
Stuart Hawkins received her BS from the University of Vermont. She now
lives in New York City where she completed her MFA at the School of Visual
Arts. Her most recent body of work, TREMOR, is inspired by the phenomenal
rapidity of world metamorphoses on all levels. The distinction between
the ordinary and the unordinary is fused in these photographs, creating
an atmosphere that could be in the past, present or future. In their lack
of place, their disorientation, and their inclusion of seemingly incompatible
elements, the photographs aim to confuse the viewer. Discombobulation
within the imagery displaces the viewer who, like an exile, is forced to
navigate the unknown. Thus, TREMOR, parallels our world today as the complexities
of life, as we approach the 21st century, dislocate us and make us potential
exiles in our own land. |
