Dore Bowen
University of Rochester
Dore Bowen earned her BA in Media Studies from the Evergreen State College,
her MA in Interdisciplinary Art from San Francisco University, and is currently
working towards a PhD in Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of
Rochester. Bowen has taught at the Rochester Institute of Technology
and the University of Rochester.
Bowen’s
artwork approaches irony with the use of hyperbole, scale, juxtaposition
and miniaturization in relation to small toys, forms which are used rhetorically
to (de)emphasize and (de)familiarize cultural values; seeking
to disrupt the normative reading of these childish objects in
order to create new readings. In her latest series she addresses such
issues as the hegemonic construction of “family life,” adapting
surrealist strategies to “make strange” notions of cultural
normativity.
