William Wilson
University of New Mexico

William Wilson received his BA in studio art and art history from Oberlin College in 1993. Currently, William is pursuing a MFA in photography at the University of New Mexico. His work problematizes the visual and historical relations of colonization imbedded in the representation of American Indians. Wilson is particularly interested in the representations of the Navajo nation of which he is a member. Primarily an installation artist, Wilson constructs environments which expose the viewing act in order to unpack the processes of reception and consumption of images of American Indians.

Currently, William is working on his dissertation, investigating the historical development of photography of American Indians through the framework of a historical analysis of federal Indian policy. Wilson hopes to publish writings on topics concerning the Navajo nation, teach at Navajo community college in Tseli, Arizona, and maintain a fine herd of sheep after receiving his MFA
