Robert Ladislas Derr
Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia

Robert Ladislas Derr received his BFA from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Currently, he is a candidate for his MFA at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. Robert teaches introductory photography and is the Assistant Director at the University Gallery. Teaching photography and curating exhibitions are integral to his artistic growth. The style of Derr’s photography is derived from social realism. The images are sequentially placed in a variety of conceptual and formal ways. This placement of the photographs enables the internal context of an image to be altered due to retinal stain. Derr describes retinal stain as the phenomenon occurring when the after-image of a photograph forces the subject of the next image to be recontextualized. Derr believes that this allows the viewer to create a personal narrative that reflects his/her own culture and characteristics.
